Has the Government Failed the U.S. People?

Mike Brown Resigns as Director of FEMA!!!
"Bush puts people in jobs who don't know what they're doing," said Shirley Carignan, a retiree and a political independent from Weymouth, Massachusetts. "I think he's picking friends for these jobs. My girlfriend raises Arabians. You know horses, so what? Horses and people are different things."
The Government on all levels; Republican & Democrat both simply failed those effected by Hurricane Katrina. Why, it is very clear. No significant degree of aid arrived until 5 days after the storm had passed. As a resident of Sarasota, Florida having been through many hurricanes I know if this was my affluent community we would have had aid at the latest a few hours after the storm had passed.

Simply the majority of these people are poor and minority and therefore this elitist arrogant Republican government neglected them.

My Opinion: The Clinton's are truly great public servants. Fmr. President G. H. Bush Sr. also agrees with the Clinton’s sentiments.

Recent comments by Fmr. 1st Lady Barbara Bush are indicative of the path our Republican leadership has placed the United States on. Leading up to a country divided not just by Race but by Money & Class. Their policies are leaving the U.S. open to the same mistakes committed by early France, Russia, Germany, and Great Britain. These countries once had aristocracies which were overthrown. What is the American aristocracy? Corporations and Elites like the Bush Family. They are advocating a society of elites whom hold the power. The working class whom are regarded as disposable and 2nd class (Example: You, Me and our Soldiers). And the poor whom have no rights, no services and are seen as lesser than citizens.

I have created this website to call out these wrongs I see in our nation and because I believe the American Dream should Always be attainable by Everyone.

If there ever was a time for you to be involved in your Government, it is Now!

when there were hurricanes in your city...did the whole city flood for months? your comment that republicans hate poor people shows how insane you are.

the mayor of new orleans and governor of the state are both democrats...do they hate all those poor people too?

there were hundreds of school busses that were suppose to be used to evacuate poor people out of the city...why didn't the democrat mayor do it? He is black and democrat...and by your logic he must hate poor black people.

"the game" I said nothing about Republicans "hating" the poor. My exact word was 'neglect'. There is a difference.

Logistically, Hurricane Katrina rendered the city of New Orleans and it’s Mayor City Government with no structural resources to respond. The mayor did all he could, but at the Governor’s level to the President more should have been done. Furthermore it is clear these types of situations are not in the hands of City Government but FEMA. This is a fact, no matter where the natural disaster occurs within our country.

Democrats are being very careful not to politicize this disaster. Naturally we are inclined to respond to such events, hence where “bleeding heart” liberal comes from. I heard of a statement studying the brain activities of Liberals and Conservatives and I believe our responses to this event are evident of a possible difference. If you notice we are only criticizing facts that Hell Bush Sr. And Clinton agree on. Criticism that will bring about positive change in the beauracracy of Emergency/Disaster Management. Humanitarianism and helping those in need is natural for us, no politics involved.

Conservatives are subtracting from the collective integrity of your camp by defending FEMA & THE Federal Government. You have Republican & Democratic Senators teaming up to form investigative bodies. You have the FEMA Director Brown blaming the residents of New Orleans for not leaving forgetting the fact that poor, elderly, and sick people CANNOT just up and leave. And President Bush saying is saying its “not time to play the blame game”.

Something else to think about: what if this were a bomb and not a Hurricane?

not so sure a majority of this falls on the federal government:

The primary responsibility for dealing with emergencies does not belong to the federal government. It belongs to local and state officials who are charged by law with the management of the crucial first response to disasters. First response should be carried out by local and state emergency personnel under the supervision of the state governor and his emergency operations center.
The actions and inactions of Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin are a national disgrace due to their failure to implement the previously established evacuation plans of the state and city. Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin cannot claim that they were surprised by the extent of the damage and the need to evacuate so many people. Detailed written plans were already in place to evacuate more than a million people. The plans projected that 300,000 people would need transportation in the event of a hurricane like Katrina. If the plans had been implemented, thousands of lives would likely have been saved.
In addition to the plans, local, state and federal officials held a simulated hurricane drill 13 months ago, in which widespread flooding supposedly trapped 300,000 people inside New Orleans. The exercise simulated the evacuation of more than a million residents. The problems identified in the simulation apparently were not solved.

I think if there was a bomb and it happened in an area of the country where competent leaders lived...things would be fine..also, if the bomb didn't cause roads to be flooded, the federal government could get there quicker

Governor Blanco yes I'm sure will be investigated. The Mayor, I ask you to think realistically. Nagin could do no more than he did.

FEMA is always in charge when natural disasters occur.

In addition funding for large projects such as the New Orleans Levees, and damns comes from the Federal Government. Which Bush has been annually cutting funding for (Army Core of Engineers). This is one reason he does not want us "playing the blame game".

The only person I'm defending is the Mayor Nagin. He has received undue criticism. I know for a fact from living in FL that is affected by Hurricanes very often that the role of the City Government & the County Government mainly lies with clean up efforts.

The Police force is also visible within the community during such disasters. With preparation, evacuation, etc.

The Mayor of any City does not have the resources beyond this. A Mayor does not have troops, Helicopters, nor Heavy duty capital like Military Boats. Because of bureaucracy a Mayor also does not possess the authority, as seen with Nagin, calling for assistance to request Federal assistance.

These resources are under the control of Governors and the President.

Relief, Recovery, etc... belongs to FEMA.

"How SHOULD the President have handled this disaster?"

History shows plenty of examples of presidents who actually knew how to lead:

In September 1999, Hurricane Floyd a category 3 was bearing down the Carolinas and Virginia.
President Clinton was in Christchurch, New Zealand - meeting with President Jiang of China (you know, actually working). He made the proclamation that only Presidents can make and declared the areas affected by Floyd “Federal Disaster Areas” so the National Guard and Military can begin to mobilize. Then he cut short his meetings overseas and flew home to coordinate the rescue efforts. This all one day BEFORE a Cat-3 hit the coast. That is how you do it.

How about this dope’s own father during Hurricane Andrew? Once again, President Bush (41) — August, 1992 — was in the midst of a brutal campaign for re-election. Yet, he cut off his campaigning the day before and went to Washington where he martialed the largest military operation on US soil in history. He sent in 7,000 National Guard and 22,000 regular military personnel, and all the gear to begin the clean up within hours after Andrew passed through Florida. ‘Cause, you know, those people and their stuff was actually where it belonged, rather than being used for insurgent target-practice halfway around the world in a vain effort to make Iraq safe for Iranian takeover.

In August of 1969 when Cat-5 Hurricane Camille hit roughly the same area as Katrina, President Nixon had already readied the National Guard and ordered all Gulf rescue vessels and equipment from Tampa and Houston to follow the Hurricane in. There were over 1,000 regular military with two dozen helicopters to assist the Coast Guard and National Guard within hours after the skies cleared.

Bush 43 - August 2005 - Cat-5 Hurricane Katrina bears down on New Orleans and the Mississippi gulf. Both states are down nearly 8,000 National Guard troops because they are in Iraq — with most of the rescue gear needed. Bush is on vacation. The day before Katrina makes landfall, Bush rides his bike for two hours. New Mexico offers to send its own National Guard units to Louisiana - the only problem is that they could not get the approval of the Federal Government. The day she hits, he goes to Johnnie McCain’s birthday party; and lies to old people about the multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical company welfare boondoggle. People are dying, the largest port of entry in the United States (and fifth largest in the World) is under attack. Troops and supplies are desperately needed. The levees are cracking and the emergency 1-1/2 ton sandbags are ready, but there aren’t enough helicopters or pilots to set them before the levees fail. The mayor of New Orleans begs for Federal coordination, but there is none, and the sandbagging never gets done. So Bush — naturally — goes to San Diego to play guitar with country singer and lie to the military about how Iraq is just exactly like WWII. The levees give way, filling New Orleans with water, sewage, oil and chemicals. Ten percent of all US exports, and 50% of all agricultural exports ordinarly go through this port. It is totally destroyed. Bush decides he’ll end his vacation a couple of days early — TOMORROW –BECAUSE HE HAS TICKETS TO A PADRES GAME! He goes back to the Fake Farm in Crawford, with every intention of doing something on WEDNESDAY about this disaster that happened starting last Sunday night.
Failure to plan. Too little response, too late. Insufficent troop and equipment levels — sound familiar?

Please note that the first three examples were before 9/11 and the whole homeland security initiative which was supposed to make the US safer and more responsive to any type of emergency.

Bush declared the whole area a disaster area idiot. also..

WARNING: Common sense and logic below....partisan liberals may want to take cover

The stories are starting to come in regarding why the relief effort was so poor. Now, these are actual facts, and not blind emotional rants, so any liberals who read this might want to take some Tylenol first, to stop all the migraine headaches that will occur from reading common sense logic:

1. The mayor did not use hundreds of busses that were supposed to be used to evacuate the poor of the city. This is FACT. You have seen the pictures of the buses, and read the part of the New Orleans evacuation plan that says the busses are suppose to be used. Instead the mayor ordered for coach buses to come in to evacuate the people. RESULT: thousands of people died who could not get out of the city.

2. The Red Cross and Salvation Army were ready to go minutes after the hurricane was gone. City officials told them they could not enter because it would hinder relief efforts. RESULT: Hundreds more died because they were not given food and water.

3. Gov. Blanco would not release the National Guard. RESULT: Hundreds looted, obtained guns and caused chaos. Therefore 1500 rescue workers could not continue rescuing the people that the mayor thought were too good to be bussed out on school buses.

4. City officials have been taking money earmarked for updating city flood prevention measures for at least 10 years. RESULT: The levees broke, causing 80% of the city to be flooded.

5. People are now doing a great job helping rescue victims. While this is going on, the main stream media and democrats are on TV trying to politicize this tragedy. Only 13% of the American people blame GWB for what happened. RESULT: Democrats will continue to look like crazy political opportunistic hacks who are so desperate for power they will do anything to get it back…and they will lose more seats in 2006.

6. Moveon.org’s plan to help the victims was to have hundreds of them protest outside the White House….problem is only 3 showed up…surrounded by a few full time protesters. RESULT: Makes the average American want to puke watching how disrespectful and disgraceful the far left is.

Can one of the liberals who comments here answer this…should the CEO of a company with 100,000 employees take the initial blame when someone working in the mailroom does something wrong.

Mistakes were made, mostly on the local level….and yes….there needs to be some investigating done to see how to make things better. We already know the Democrats that run Louisiana are incompetent. New Orleans has one of, if not thee highest murder rate in the nation. I have been told the shootings that were happening after the hurricane are common place in that hell hole run by a democrat.

The second someone starts ripping the President as being the sole problem, they give themselves away as a political opportunist. Maybe we should just say, from now on, that the person is pulling a “Cindy.”

"the game" u know you are welcome to comment here just keep it civil. I deleted your last remarks. You're welcome to repost minus a couple "words and personal insults”.

Don't believe all the propaganda you hear. Like insulting relief efforts by groups like Moveon.Org. I know the last thing on my mind is playing political games. When lives are at stack there is no room for error. And I’m calling this like I see it. I look at a lot of this issues from the perspective of what would I do if I were in their shoes. I at least know if I were the Mayor of New Orleans I could do no more than Nagin did after Katrina. But yes, some conservatives have valid points in regards to the preparations for a major disaster hitting New Orleans. But keeping this in mind, we cannot forget that Cities do not pay for such large scale projects: the funding come from a multiplicity of areas: mainly the Federal Government.

We must now also not forget that after Katrina the response was in the hands of all of the above: FEMA/Homeland Security, the State/Governor and the President. This is where the bulk of criticism is directed. New Orleans resident waited 5-7 Days for Help. And it is these citizens that will judge their Mayor Nagin, because they were there and now if he did all he could do to prepare the City for this storm.

Fire the Democrats in charge, Fire the Republicans in charge. Fire them ALL. Doesn't matter to me, everyone responsible for this blunder ( from the City Councilman to President Bush) should be removed from office.

And for God's sake I am hearing comments from leaders like "the victims are to blame", "nothing went wrong", “why rebuild a city that is 6 feet below sea level”. There are thousands Dead, how in the world can anyone approach this situation rationalizing & avoiding the incompetents of someone elected to serve simply because they belong to your political party? I wrote Gov. Blanco (D) and told her of her incompetents as I did Bush, Delay, & Hastert for their idiotic statements in this matter.

It has been reported today, that FEMA Director John Brown is no longer in charge of ground operations. He has been replaced by an Admiral from the Coast Guard.
