Palm Sunday marks start of Christian Holy Week

"

It’s Palm Sunday, the beginning of the Christian Holy Week, leading up to the celebration of Easter next Sunday, April 5.

Millions of Christians worldwide carry palm leaves in processions today to recall Jesus riding a donkey into Jerusalem for Passover week nearly 2,000 years ago, when cheering crowds waved palms, hailing what they expected to be a political savior.

Jesus was later crucified by the Romans with crowds shouting approval, according to Gospel accounts.

Commemorating Palm Sunday with palm branches goes back to the early Christian church. It remains a favorite among parishioners, who are handed palm branches or palm crosses as they enter the church at many services.

In the Holy Land, where the events commemorated took place, this will be a subdued Holy Week due to ongoing war.

Jerusalem’s major holy sites are closed as the war with Iran war continues, now in its fifth week.

The holy city’s stone alleyways are mostly quiet without the traditional crowds of tourists.

The Palm Sunday procession commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem was canceled.

In his Palm Sunday sermon, Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born head of the Roman Catholic Church, condemned war.“Brothers and sisters, this is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” Pope Leo said. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them.”
